Every fall, the PC(USA)’s Peacemaking Program invites people from around the world to participate in A Season of Peace, a month-long journey that deepens the understanding of peace and justice. This initiative encourages congregations, families, and individuals to reflect on their role in promoting peace through a series of educational and inspirational activities.

As part of the local celebration of this season, Westminster Presbyterian Church in Portage, Michigan, will host an event featuring keynote speaker June L. Lorenzo. The event will take place on Friday, October 4, at 7:00 PM, at 1515 Helen Avenue, Portage, MI.

June L. Lorenzo, an attorney, consultant, and human rights advocate, will deliver a talk titled “The Doctrine of Discovery: The Effects, Historical and Present Day.” Lorenzo, who practices law in New Mexico, has extensive experience advocating for indigenous rights before international bodies such as the United Nations and the Organization of American States. Her work has spanned from serving as a judge for Native Nations to providing legal counsel to the Laguna Pueblo and Navajo Nation, and addressing issues related to uranium mining and the protection of sacred sites.

This event promises to offer an enlightening perspective on historical and contemporary issues surrounding indigenous rights and justice.
