A new book by award-winning author Randal Maurice Jelks includes a series of letters he’s written to Martin Luther King Jr. about issues currently confronting our country.

“Letters to Martin: Meditations on Democracy in Black America” was released January 11, 2022 by Jelks, who is a Member-at-Large of the Presbytery of Lake Michigan.  

The book includes twelve meditations by Jelks about topics like economic inequality, freedom of assembly, police brutality, ongoing social class conflicts, and geopolitics. The book evokes King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail.

Jelks is a professor at the University of Kansas, documentary producer and author of numerous books. His books include “African Americans in the Furniture City” and “Benjamin Elijah Mays, Schoolmaster of the Movement.” He teaches American Studies, African Studies and African American Studies at the University, and was an executive producer of the documentary,  I, Too, Sing America; Langston Hughes Unfurled.
