Several of the seven movies included in the “Films for Our Future” series by the Transformations Spirituality Center of Kalamazoo now are available online through April 30, 2020.
In an email describing the opportunity, event organizers write:
Because of the quarantine, we have arranged to have seven films planned as part of our film festival to be available to you. We have a unique opportunity during this time to reflect on our beautiful world and what we might do after our current crisis. These films are high-quality documentaries not available by any other film streaming service.
Registering to view the movies is easy. Just visit https://www.transformationscenter.org/ and click on “Films for Our Future” to access the registration link. Or click on the button belwo for a direct link. (While registering, you will have an opportunity to make a donation. We realize this a difficult time financial for many, including the Transformations Spirituality Center. Any assistance is appreciated.) After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with a link and password for the screening room.
Each movie is available for screening for a 24-hour period, at the assigned date and time. This will allow you time to enjoy each film at your leisure. (Questions and discussions also are being encouraged on the center’s Facebook page after each screening.) The films include:
Groundswell Rising – Thursday, April 23.
The 24-hour screening begins at 7 p.m.
Groundswell Rising brings us into the lives of people directly impacted by hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and those on the front lines dedicated to stopping this form of gas extraction. Opposition to fracking arose from both sides of the political spectrum. You’ll meet parents, scientists, artists, teachers, clergy, community organizers, and business leaders who are convinced that this controversial form of gas extraction is a serious health and environmental risk. Driven by deep moral conviction, we see how they are standing up to one of the world’s most powerful industries.
The Sequel – Friday, April 24.

Opening with a powerful ‘deep time’ perspective, from the beginning of the Earth to our present moment, this film recognizes the fundamental unsustainability of today’s society and dares to ask the big question:
~What will follow?
~What happens when we no longer have economic expansion?
~ How can we thrive without constantly increasing production & consumption?
This film looks at the influential work of David Fleming, who dared to re-imagine a thriving civilization after the collapse of our current mainstream economies and inspired the Transition Towns movement.
Anthropocene – Thursday, April 30.
The 24-hour screening begins at 7 p.m.
The word anthropocene combines the root “anthropo”, meaning “human” with the root “-cene”, the standard suffix for “epoch” in geologic time – The Human Age. Have we entered a new geological epoch, a time when human activity has altered the topography and the climate of the earth to an extent that will permanently mark the fossil record of the planet? There is overwhelming global evidence that atmospheric, geologic, hydrologic, biospheric and other earth system processes are now altered by humans. Scientists discuss this concept, and ask important, hopeful questions about how our species must see and act from the perspective of a longer, larger, interconnected whole, if life as we know it is to survive.
