Referring students to programs, participating in a Trivia Night fundraiser and providing financial support are ways Presbytery of Lake Michigan members can help UKirk support Michigan State University students and the community impacted by a February 13, 2023, mass shooting on campus.
“UKirk will continue providing many opportunities for the students to connect with others and be cared for in community,” says UKirk Campus Minister Neil Myer.
But, he said, UKirk needs help from congregational leaders and presbytery members to connect students with the opportunities.
One program to which presbytery members can refer students is the Creatio Divina: Art & Spirituality workshop on Saturday, March 25, 2023 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in East Lansing.
Separate sessions – led by Carmelle Beaugelin, a Haitian-American artist/ theologian based in Princeton, NJ – will be offered free to faculty and students. Students also are encouraged to help UKirk with its Book Project. The group meets at 4:45 p.m. each Monday to sort new and gently used books donated for distribution to children and youth.
Also each Monday, UKirk members enjoy dinner and conversation starting at 6 p.m. There is no cost to participants.
On April 14, the biannual Trivia Night will help UKirk raise funds for its programs. The competition begins at 7 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church of Okemos, and includes a silent auction also available online and a dessert auction. The cost is $20 per person or $120 for a table of six participants.

Event proceeds and general donations will help UKirk fund unexpected costs as the group provides its traditional programs – including hosting final exam study and hospitality hours from April 29 through May 4 in the church at 1315 Abbott Road, East Lansing – and adds special programs supporting any students and staff seeking connection as they deal with the impact of the February 13 mass shooting.
