The Read, Pray, Wonder, Play! initiative offers families and churches thoughtfully crafted guides to enrich the experience of sharing picture books with children. These resources provide prayers, discussion prompts, and engaging activities designed to bring stories to life, fostering deeper connections and understanding.
Developed by the Around the Table initiative of the PC(USA), these guides are available in both English and Spanish. They accompany various children’s books, such as “The Dress in the Window” by Robert Tregoning and Pippa Curnick, “Psalms of Wonder” by Carey Wallace, and “Walking toward Peace” by Kathleen Krull and Annie Bowler.
Each guide includes tailored prayers, questions to inspire wonder, and activities that encourage children to engage more deeply with the story’s themes. For example, the guide for “My Elephant Is Blue: A Book about Big, Heavy Feelings” by Melinda Szymanik and Vasanti Unka suggests discussing the emotions associated with having an “elephant” in one’s life and exploring conversations one might have with such a presence.
