Three programs are being offered by the Synod of the Covenant as it supports spirit-inspired worship to develop congregational vitality.

Two of the programs are geared toward beginning preachers.

“Me? A Preacher?: A Preaching Workshop” will be offered by the Maumee Valley Presbytery via Zoom from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 8,  and Saturday, May 22. The program will be led by the Rev. Jeanne Gray, pastor of Collingwood Presbyterian Church in Toledo, and the Rev. Dr. Chip Hardwick, interim executive of the Synod of the Covenant. The cost is about $20 for a textbook. Participants should plan to complete five to 10 hours of work before each session. Find more details and a registration form below.

“Preaching and Teaching: The art and science of inspiring hearts and minds through spoken words” will be offered through Alma College via Zoom at 7 p.m. on four successive  Thursday evenings starting July 8. The online course will help lay leaders, commissioned ruling elders and anyone 18 years or old preparing to enter the pulpit supply ranks. The class will be taught by the Rev. Denise Anderson, former co-moderator of the PC(USA); Rev. Dr, Andrew Pomerville, chaplain of Alma College, and Rev. Dr. Chip Hardwick, interim executive of the Synod of the Covenant. Cost is $150. Find more details and a registration form below, or send an email to pomervillead@alma.edu.

The third program is a monthly series geared towards those who preach regularly and want to strengthen aspects of their preaching. Each program in the series – being led by the Rev. Chip Hardwick who holds a doctorate on preaching and homiletics from Princeton Theological Seminary – is designed as a one-off experience via Zoom.

The first session will focus on “How to Preach about Racial Justice without Losing Your Conviction or Getting Fired,” and will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 5. There is no cost to attend these sessions. Register below for the program.

Future sessions will focus on Preaching as Persuasion, Preaching about Suicide/Mental Health, and Getting out of Your Preaching Rut. Session will be recorded for those who cannot attend live.
